Can I determine the abv of my wine if I don’t have a beginning hydrometer reading?
I’m not sure I got the initial reading done correctly because I didn’t have a testing tube to put my hydrometer in so I was trying to test in my primary bucket and then in my carboy. I’m not quite sure I got the reading right. Is it possible to calculate the alcohol level at bottling without that?
Not really.
Once the fermentation kicks off, there’s no original value to compare your final reading to. It’s the difference between the two that ultimately determines the alcohol content.
One ballpark technique is with a tool called a “vinometer” which can only be used once fermentation is all complete and all sediment has settled (i.e. it’s perfectly clear). It can get you within about 2% of the true reading for the sake of approximation.

The other option would be to take a sample to a testing lab which can either test by way of a distillation technique or some other form. This would cost more time and money than starting another batch…or just living with what you’ve got without really knowing.
